GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It is the practice of structuring, wording and marking up content so that generative AI systems (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) cite it as a source in their answers.
GEO overlaps with classic SEO but has distinct mechanics. Where SEO optimizes for ranking in a list of blue links, GEO optimizes for extraction by large language models: direct answer first, entity-rich, structured Q and A, explicit citations, schema.org markup, fresh dates, and presence on sources that LLMs already trust (Wikipedia, G2, Capterra, industry publications).
GEO building blocks
- Answer-first paragraph (40 to 60 words) under every H1
- Entity mentions with schema.org sameAs to Wikidata
- FAQPage, HowTo and DefinedTerm JSON-LD
- Numbered lists and comparison tables (LLMs extract them well)
- Fresh dates stamped visibly and in dateModified
- Presence on sources LLMs index (G2, Capterra, Wikipedia stubs, Reddit)
