Muck Rack alternatives in 2026: 7 PR platforms compared on price and database

Short answer

The Muck Rack alternatives worth evaluating in 2026 are Cision, Meltwater, Prowly, Prezly, Mynewsdesk, Agility PR Solutions and PressPilot. Muck Rack itself runs from a 5,000 USD one-user licence to a 13,000 USD median contract (Prezly, August 2026; Vendr, February 2026). The seven run from 60 EUR per campaign to 25,800 USD a year.

Database sizes are the vendors' own claims as reported by AuthorityTech and Prowly; none of them says how many contacts are current. Everything on this page is a journalist database or outreach tool: a wire such as Business Wire is a different product and does not belong in this comparison.

Why PR teams leave Muck Rack

The price, and not knowing it. Muck Rack's pricing page carries no rate card and returned HTTP 403 to automated readers when we checked on 3 September 2026. A one-user licence is reported at 5,000 USD, the average buyer at about 10,000 USD (Prezly, August 2026), and the 24 quotes Rephonic collected run from 3,500 USD to 53,000 USD for a 7 to 9 seat team (26 August 2026). A team cannot budget against that spread without a sales cycle.

Annual contracts, no trial, no monthly exit. Muck Rack requires a 12-month commitment with no month-to-month option and no free trial (Prezly, August 2026; AuthorityTech, July 2026). The only way to evaluate the database is inside a sales demo, and Vendr's buyers still saved 16.97% on average against the first quote (February 2026).

Half the workflow is somewhere else. Muck Rack researches journalists and tracks pitches. It does not write the release, it does not host a newsroom, and it is not a wire, so teams pay a 13,000 USD median contract plus a subscription for the rest. The full price breakdown is on our Muck Rack pricing page.

The 7 alternatives, one by one

1. PressPilot: pay per campaign, no contract

PressPilot is the tool we make. It replaces the sending half of Muck Rack: you pick journalists by beat from a database of 45,476 contacts (live count, September 2026), the AI drafts the release in English, French, Spanish or Portuguese, the release is hosted on your newsroom, and you see who opened and replied. One credit is one journalist contacted.

Price: subscriptions at 29 EUR per month for 100 credits, 79 EUR for 300 or 179 EUR for 800; one-off packs at 60 EUR for 100 credits, 195 EUR for 500, 340 EUR for 1,000 and 750 EUR for 2,500, excl. VAT (presspilot.io/pricing, October 2026). Credits never expire.

Strengths: no contract and a published price; AI writing and newsroom included; data hosted in the EU under GDPR.

Limitations: no journalist research archive, so no way to see what a reporter published last week; no media monitoring; no wire, so no SEC or other regulated disclosure.

Best for: founders, agencies and comms teams that send targeted releases and do not do daily journalist research.

2. Prezly: the newsroom-first platform

Prezly is built around a branded newsroom, with a contact CRM and email campaigns on top. It has no journalist database of its own (AuthorityTech, July 2026), so it suits teams that already hold a contact list they trust, including one exported from Muck Rack.

Price: Essential 100 EUR per month billed annually, or 150 EUR monthly, for 1 user and 5,000 contacts; Standard 250 EUR billed annually for 2 users and 10,000 contacts; Enterprise on quote; 14-day trial (prezly.com, read 3 September 2026). AuthorityTech places annual spend at 1,200 to 10,000 USD (July 2026).

Strengths: the best-documented newsroom product in the category; published pricing with monthly or annual billing; a real 14-day trial where Muck Rack has none.

Limitations: you bring your own contacts and remain responsible for their GDPR basis; 1 user on the entry plan; no monitoring.

Best for: in-house teams and agencies that publish often and want a newsroom that looks like the brand.

3. Prowly: a bigger database at a readable price

Prowly, now folded into Semrush's AI PR toolkit, combines a media database, pitching, a press room and light monitoring. It is the closest thing in this list to a Muck Rack replacement that you can price before a demo.

Price: from 258 USD per month billed annually (Prezly, 28 August 2026). Rephonic reports the same 258 USD basic annual plan and 416 USD per month for Pro, priced in December 2025 (26 August 2026). Database 1,000,000+ contacts, annual spend 5,000 to 15,000 USD (AuthorityTech, July 2026). Prowly's own pricing page redirected to its home page when we checked on 3 September 2026, so the figure comes from those two publishers.

Strengths: database plus outreach plus press room in one plan; four times Muck Rack's claimed contact count; monthly or annual billing.

Limitations: monitoring and reporting are lighter than Cision or Meltwater; the public price is not on Prowly's own site; seats add up quickly.

Best for: small PR teams that want breadth of contacts without an enterprise contract. See Prowly vs Muck Rack.

4. Mynewsdesk: newsroom and database in one subscription

Mynewsdesk combines a hosted newsroom, a journalist database and monitoring in a subscription priced for mid-size European teams. It is the cheapest way in this list to keep a database and a public newsroom under one bill.

Price: Essential from 220 EUR per month, bought inside the free trial, 10-day trial (Prezly, 28 August 2026). Database of 1,000,000 contacts (Prowly, June 2025). Mynewsdesk's own pricing page returned a 404 on 3 September 2026.

Strengths: newsroom plus database in one plan; entry price in the same range as Prezly; a trial where Muck Rack has none.

Limitations: the price is documented by third parties, not on the vendor's site; Prezly's review flags data-quality concerns raised in user reviews; no wire.

Best for: European brands that want a public newsroom and a database without a US-priced contract. See Mynewsdesk vs PressPilot.

5. Cision: the widest database, on quote

Cision is the incumbent Muck Rack was built against: monitoring, reporting and PR Newswire distribution around the largest claimed contact database in the category. On real contract data it costs about the same as Muck Rack.

Price: no public price. Median contract 12,625 USD, from 3,150 to 30,368 USD across 77 deals (Vendr, February 2026). Prezly estimates the platform from 7,200 USD a year (August 2026); AuthorityTech places it at 25,000 to 80,000 USD and more with a 1,400,000+ contact database, annual only, no trial (July 2026).

Strengths: 1,400,000+ claimed contacts, more than five times Muck Rack's 250,000+; monitoring and outreach in one contract; PR Newswire distribution available as part of the same relationship.

Limitations: annual only, no trial, no public price; the interface is the most common complaint in third-party reviews; the wire is billed per release on top.

Best for: enterprise comms teams that want database, monitoring and a wire from one vendor. See Cision pricing 2026.

6. Meltwater: monitoring first, outreach second

Meltwater starts from media monitoring and social listening and adds a journalist database. It is the tool procurement puts next to Muck Rack when the brief includes reputation tracking, and it costs twice as much on contract data.

Price: none published; Meltwater's pricing page says most agreements are annual with a 12-month minimum. Median contract 25,800 USD, from 5,375 to 56,993 USD across 91 deals (Vendr, February 2026). Estimates range from 6,000 USD a year (Prezly, August 2026) to 20,000 to 40,000 USD and more (AuthorityTech, July 2026). Database 380,000+ contacts (AuthorityTech, July 2026).

Strengths: monitoring and social listening as the core product, which Muck Rack treats as a module; multi-market coverage; reporting built for executives.

Limitations: the widest price spread in this list; 12-month minimum, no free trial; no newsroom and no wire.

Best for: brands whose first job is reputation tracking, with outreach as a secondary use. See Meltwater vs PressPilot.

7. Agility PR Solutions: reporting and the largest database

Agility PR Solutions sells a database, outreach and monitoring with an emphasis on coverage reports. AuthorityTech lists it with the largest database of the six platforms it compared, at a price range below Cision and Meltwater.

Price: 6,000 to 20,000 USD a year, database 1,500,000+ contacts (AuthorityTech, 23 July 2026). Agility's own site has a Pricing entry in its menu, but agilitypr.com/pricing returned a 404 on 3 September 2026 and no figure appears anywhere else on the site, so the range comes from AuthorityTech alone.

Strengths: largest claimed database in the comparison; monitoring and reporting in the same tool; a range that overlaps Muck Rack's at the bottom.

Limitations: quote-based like Muck Rack; no public pricing page; no newsroom product comparable to Prezly or Mynewsdesk.

Best for: comms directors who owe weekly coverage reports and want database and monitoring under one quote.

Muck Rack vs PressPilot

The short version: 60 EUR per 100 journalists with no contract, against a 5,000 USD one-user licence and a 13,000 USD median contract; 45,476 journalists (live count) against 250,000+ contacts; AI writing and newsroom included, against journalist research and pitch tracking we do not have. The full side-by-side, with scenarios by team size, is on Muck Rack vs PressPilot.

Migration checklist from Muck Rack to any alternative

  1. Export your media lists. Request a full CSV export from Muck Rack before you give notice, and record the lawful basis for each contact. Unlimited list exports start at the Standard plan (Rephonic, 26 August 2026), so check what your plan allows before the clock runs out.
  2. Read the renewal clause. Muck Rack sells annual contracts with no monthly option (Prezly, August 2026). Find the notice window, put the date in the team calendar and send written non-renewal before it closes.
  3. Map what you actually use. Journalist research, list building, pitching, coverage tracking, reporting. If research is not the daily bottleneck, the tools below cover the rest for a fraction of a 13,000 USD median contract.
  4. Shortlist three tools from the table above. One per priority: cost per campaign, database depth, monitoring. Ask each for the price in writing with seat count and contract length.
  5. Run a paid pilot on one real release. Send the same release from two tools while Muck Rack is still live and compare open rate, reply rate and attributable coverage.
  6. Rebuild the pitch history somewhere. Muck Rack keeps the record of who you pitched and what ran. Export it and store it where the next tool or a spreadsheet can read it, or you lose two years of relationship context.
  7. Clean and reimport the list. Drop contacts with no reply in 12 months, re-verify emails, respect opt-outs.
  8. Train the team and archive. One hour covers a modern tool. Archive the Muck Rack exports for your legal retention period.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Muck Rack alternatives in 2026?
Seven tools cover the same job as Muck Rack, a journalist database with outreach: Cision, Meltwater, Prowly, Prezly, Agility PR Solutions, Mynewsdesk and PressPilot. Prices run from 60 EUR per campaign on PressPilot and 100 EUR per month on Prezly (prezly.com, September 2026) to a 25,800 USD median contract on Meltwater (Vendr, February 2026). Muck Rack itself has a 13,000 USD median contract (Vendr, February 2026).
Who are Muck Rack's main competitors?
Cision and Meltwater at the top of the market: Vendr's February 2026 contract data puts their medians at 12,625 USD and 25,800 USD against 13,000 USD for Muck Rack. In the mid-market, Prowly at 258 USD per month, Agility PR Solutions at 6,000 to 20,000 USD a year (AuthorityTech, July 2026) and Mynewsdesk at 100 to 200 EUR per month (Prezly, 28 August 2026). For pay-per-campaign outreach, PressPilot at 60 EUR per 100 journalists.
What is the cheapest Muck Rack alternative?
PressPilot, at 29 EUR per month for 100 journalist credits on subscription, or 60 EUR for a one-off pack of 100, excl. VAT and with no contract. Among subscription platforms, Prezly's Essential plan at 100 EUR per month billed annually (prezly.com, September 2026) and Mynewsdesk at 100 to 200 EUR per month (Prezly, 28 August 2026) are the lowest, but Prezly has no journalist database of its own.
Is Prowly cheaper than Muck Rack?
Yes, by a wide margin at entry. Prowly starts at 258 USD per month billed annually, about 3,100 USD a year (Prezly, 28 August 2026), against a 5,000 USD basic one-user licence and a 13,000 USD median contract at Muck Rack (Prezly, August 2026; Vendr, February 2026). AuthorityTech puts Prowly at 5,000 to 15,000 USD a year with a 1,000,000+ contact database, against 10,000 to 25,000 USD and 250,000+ contacts for Muck Rack (July 2026).
Is Cision cheaper than Muck Rack?
They are close on contract data. Vendr's February 2026 medians are 12,625 USD for Cision and 13,000 USD for Muck Rack. Estimates disagree: Prezly puts Cision at 7,200 USD a year against about 10,000 USD for Muck Rack (August 2026), while AuthorityTech reverses it with Cision at 25,000 to 80,000 USD and Muck Rack at 10,000 to 25,000 USD (July 2026). Neither vendor publishes a price.
Is there a free Muck Rack alternative?
No tool in this category is free beyond a trial. Prezly offers 14 days (prezly.com, September 2026) and Mynewsdesk 10 days (Prezly, 28 August 2026), while Muck Rack, Cision and Meltwater offer none (AuthorityTech, July 2026). PressPilot has a free account and charges only when you send, from 60 EUR for 100 journalists.
Can PressPilot replace Muck Rack?
For sending, yes. For research, no. PressPilot sends a release to 100 targeted journalists for 60 EUR with AI writing in 4 languages, a hosted newsroom and open and reply tracking, from a database of 45,476 journalists (live count, September 2026). Muck Rack builds journalist profiles from published work and tracks pitches and coverage against them, with a 250,000+ contact database (AuthorityTech, July 2026). Teams that pitch by name every day should keep the research tool.
Should I keep a wire alongside a Muck Rack alternative?
Only if you file regulated disclosures. None of the seven tools on this page is a wire, and none files with the SEC. If your releases are earnings, guidance or other Reg FD material, keep PR Newswire, Business Wire or GlobeNewswire for that part and change only the outreach tool. Our Business Wire and PR Newswire pricing guides cover what that costs per release.
